| General | Amsterdam is the largest city and capital of the Netherlands. It has a population of over 1.2 billion people. Amsterdam has a vast history. In the 12th century during the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam became one of the most important port cities in the world. During the 17th Century Amsterdam was considered to be the wealthiest city in the world.
One of the main interesting parts of Amsterdam is the canals that spread throughout the entire city. In fact a good number of Amsterdam?s citizens live in houseboats along the canals. In July 2010 the canals were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Amsterdam is famous for many things including its liberal drug policies, its Red Light District, the Bloemenmarket or flower market which displays a wide array of of flowers including the tulip which is Holland?s national flower, and the Anne Frank House to name a few. Amsterdam is also known for its rich architecture and interesting buildings
Many tourists travel to Amsterdam because of its leniency regarding drugs. In Amsterdam Coffeshops are permitted to sell hash and marijuana to customers for personal use. Drug sales in Amsterdam are government regulated which means that while it is not technically legal there is no prosecution except in very rare and specific cases.
While it is not the only city with a Red Light district it is certainly one of the most famous. The Red light district or De Wallen as it is known in Amsterdam is located in the oldest part of the city amongst an array of canals and decorated with red lights. In Amsterdam prostitution is legal and the area is heavily guarded by policemen and security cameras.
Amsterdam was also home to many artists including Van Gogh and Rembrandt. You can visit their masterpieces in the the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum respectively.
