Information ANTALYA
| General | Antalya is the eight most populated city in Turkey. It is also the biggest international sea resort in the country.
According to legend, in 150 BC King Attalos II the king of Pergamon told his men to go find him ?heaven on earth? After a long search they came upon the region of Antalya. King Attalos then went on to rebuild the city giving in the name Attaleia which later became Adalia and then Antalya. Recently though there have been excavations showing that the city might have in fact been founded as far back as the 3rd century BC.
The climate in Antalya is fairly reasonable for a Mediterranean city.The summers tend to be dry and hot while the winters are rainy but mild. There are about 300 sunny days a year and over 3000 hours of sunlight. The record high for temperature was 45c and a record low of -4c.
Before 2000 the economy of Antalya consisted mostly of tourism, commerce, agriculture and a little industry. The agricultural products of Antalya include cut flowers, olive, olive oil, cotton, citrus fruits and bananas. The Antalya Metropolitan Municipality food market supplies 65% of the fresh fruit and vegetables in the province. As of 2000, shipyards have been built in Antalya Free Zone. These shipyards specialize in building private yachts.
There are number of festivals held in Antalya. There are two film festivals, the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival the biggest national film festival in Turkey; and the International Eurasia Film Festival. There are also a number of music and dance festivals including the Mediterranean International Music Festival, The Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival and the Antalya International Folk Music and Dance Festival Competition.
