| General | With over eleven million people Bangkok is not only the capital of Thailand but also it?s biggest city. Bangkok is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Asia.
Bangkok is the most important city in Thailand in terms of economy. Thailand spends most of its resources on Bangkok giving very little to the rest of the country. All of the major financial institutions and banks in Thailand have their headquarters in Bangkok. Due to its low cost of salary relative to other Asian countries, Bangkok is home to many regional headquarters for a lot of multinational corporations.
Bangkok has a very diverse population. There are many immigrants living in Bangkok who come from neighboring Asian countries. The biggest ethnic group in Bangkok is Chinese which accounts for 50% of the population, this makes Bangkok the world?s major city with the most people from Chinese ancestry outside of China. Around five to ten percent of the population of Bangkok are illegal immigrants.
