Information BELGRADE
GeneralBelgrade is the capital and biggest city in Serbia. Belgrade has a population of over 1.2 million people and the greater metropolitan area has a population of 1.67. Belgrade is one of the biggest cities in Southeast Europe. Although it is part of Serbia, Belgrade has an autonomous government. The metropolitan area of Belgrade is divided into 17 different municipalities each with its own local council. 15% of the Serbian population lives in Belgrade and 3.6% of Serbia?s territory is covered by Belgrade. There are seven major population groups in Belgrade. The most popular are Serbs, then Yugoslavs, Montenegrins, Roma, Croats, Macedonians and Muslins in descending order. Many different ethnicities from the former Yugoslavia has made their way into Belgrade from small towns and the countryside. There are also many refugees from surrounding countries. In the mid 1990s a group of ten to twenty thousand Chinese immigrated into Belgrade giving Block 70 in New Belgrade the nickname ?the Chinese Quarter?. During the 1970s and 80s there were many people from Middle Eastern countries who came to Belgrade to study and stayed. During that time the people came from Iran, Jordan Iraq and Syria and recently Iraqi Kurdish and Afgani people have been coming as well. The biggest religious population by far in Belgrade is the Serbian Orthodox community. After that comes Roman Catholics and then Protestants. Before Nazi Occupation there was a large Jewish Community but now there are less than five hundred citizens living in Belgrade. The historic area of Belgrade is the biggest tourist attraction. There are many famous buildings that are must sees including the National Museum, the National Theatre, Terazije Students? swuare, Knez Mihailova Street. The Temple of Saint Sova, the Old Palace and more. Another popular attraction is Beli Dvor the house belonging to the Royal Family. Inside the Palace there are many famous works of art.
