| General | Bratislava is the capital and most populated city in Slovakia. Bratislava is situated on both banks of the Danube River. Bratislava is the only country that borders two independent countries, Austria and Hungary. Additionally Bratislava and Vienna are two of the capitals in the Europe that are closest to each other at only 37 miles apart.
Bratislava is also the cultural, political and economic capital of Slovakia. The executive government branch, the Slovakian president and the parliament are all hosted in Bratislava. There are also headquarters to most of the countries big businesses in Bratislava.
The Bratislava Castle is one of the main buildings in the city. It is located about 280 feet about the Danube River. The hill on which the castle is located as been inhabited since the years between the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. The hill was also the acropolis of a Celtic town, a part of the Roman Limes Romanus, the Great Moravia?s political, religious and military center and more. The castle itself was built in the 900s when the city was under Hungarian rule. In the mid 16th century it became a Renaissance castle and a century later was reconstructed in baroque style. During the reign of Queen Maria Theresa the castle became home to the royal family. Unfortunately in the beginning of the 19th century the castle was accidentally destroyed in a fire and was only rebuilt during the 1950s.
The Bratislava Region is the richest and most economically prosperous region in all of Slovakia even though it is the smallest area and is seven out of eight in terms of population. In the beginning of the 1990s a Volkswagen factory was built in Bratislava. 68% of its production is SUVs. Other cars produced in Bratislava are the Audi Q7 and the Porsche Cayenne.
