The state legislature, the Protestant State Church, the regional parliament and the local councel are all located in Stuttgart. Stuttgart was listed as number thirty on the Mercer list of livable cities. In Germany it was ranked number seven. Struttgart was listed as number two in Germany as a socially and economically innovative city and number eleven in the world.

Stuttgart has a vibrant cultural heritage. The State Theatre houses the State Opera and it regularly hosts ballets, operas, concerts and theatre productions. In 2006 the State Theatre was named ?Theatre of the Year?. The Stuttgart Opera is a six time winner of ?Opera of the Year. One of Germany?s most important symphony orchestras, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, is located in Stuttgart. Their famous conductor, Sir Roger Norrington developed a distinct sound which is known as the Stuttgart Sound.
