GeneralTelgucigalpa, which is usually called Tegus for short, is the capital city of Hondouras. Tegucigalpa was founded in 1578 by the Spanish. It became the capital in 1880 during the time of President Marco Aurelio Soto. In 1982, the Constitution of Honduras named Tegucigalpa and its sister city Comayaguela a central district and to serve as the national capital. Telgucigalpa is the largest city both in terms of size and population and is the center of politics and administration of Honduras. Telgucigalpa is home to 16 consulates and 23 foreign embassies. There are also many national companies such as ENEE the national energy company and Hondutel the national telecommunication company. Also located in Telgucigalpa is the most important university in Honduras, the National Autonomos University of Honduras, and the national football team. In 1998 Telgucigalpa was hit by Hurricane Mitch. The hurricane destroyed part of the Comayaguela side of Telgucigalpa along with many other places along the Choluteca River. The hurricane stayed in Honduras for five days bringing heavy rains that the ground could not absorb. The landslides that were caused destroyed a good portion of the Soto neighborhood and many low areas were completely submerged. Historic buildings which are located on Calle Real were either totally destroyed or so badly damaged that there was no point in even trying to repair them. Still today Tegucigalpa is recovering from the effects of the hurricane. Tegucigalpa has fourteen museums. The more popular museums are mainly located near the historic center. Those museums are the Villa Roy Museum, The National Identity Museum, the National Art Gallery, the Republic History Museum, the Military History Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Men. In the National Autonomous University of Honduras is located the National History Museum. There are a few other museums located around the city. Honduras has a lot of crime especially geared toward tourists. Hondurans in general do not intervene if they witness a crime in fear of angering the perpetrator.
