Information TOKYO
GeneralTokyo is one of the forty seven prefectures or municipalities of Japan. Tokyo is the capital city of Japan. It is the largest metropolitan area of Japan and the center of the Greater Tokyo Area. Tokyo hosts the Japanese government, is home to the Imperial Palace and the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo, along with New York and London comprise the three ?command centers? of the world economy. Toyko is called a alpha + world city by the GaWc. It was named number four on the Most Livable City list and is according to Monocle magazine is the World?s Most Livable Megalopolis. Tokyo, originally named Edo, started out as a small fishing village. Towards the end of the 12th century it was fortified by the Edo clan. Edo Castle was built in 1457 by Ota Dokan. In the year In 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun, Tokyo, which had previously become his home base, became the center of his military government. Due to this Edo became one of the most populated cities in the world with over 1 million people by the 18th century. After the shogun was overthrown and the imperial rule was reinstated the Emperor moed to Edo. Since Tokyo was already the political and cultural center, having the Emperor living there made it the de facto imperial capital and the Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace. Then the city of Tokyo was created and it became the capital until it ceased to be a municipality and became a prefecture. During the 20th Century Tokyo suffered from two major catastrophes but it thankfully was able to recover from both. The first was the Great Kantao earthquake in 1923. This led to 140,000 dead or missing persons. The second was World War II. In 1944 and 1945 Tokyo was bombed leaving 75,000 to 200,000 people killed and half the city destroyed. This devastation was almost as great as the combined bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
