| General | Zwolle is the capital city of Overijessel, Netherlands which is 120 kilometers northeast of Amsterdam. There are around 120,000 people who live in Zwolle. Zwolle is situatied near or on three rivers; the Zwarte Water, IJssel and Vecht and several canals.
People from Zwolle are known around the city as ?Blauwvingers? or Bluefingers. This nickname comes from a local legend where the city?s authorities were in need of money and decided to sell church bells to Kampen, a city nearby. The Zwolle authorities charged a high price for the church bells in order to ensure that Kampen did not make too much money out of the deal. Kampen agreed to the price if they were allowed to choose how to pay for it. Kampen paid for the church bells in copper coins of four duiten (which equals about two and a half cents.) Since Zwolle did not trust Kampen they decided to count all the money to make sure it was all there. They counted all the money until their fingers turned blue from all the copper.
One of the most famous churches in the Netherlands is located in Zwolle. This church, the Peperbus (pepperbox) is also one of the tallest church towers in the Netherlands. Also nearby is the Melk Markt, a historical museum which is located in a 16th century private mansion.
Some other historical sites in Zwolle include one of the oldest gates is in the city which dates back to the 15th century, The Sassenpoort. There is also the old town hall which was built in 1448, the Mosterdmakerstoren where Mosterdmakerstoren mustard was made, and a Dominican monastery.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, Zwolle, along with Deventer, was one of the centers of a monastic movenment called the Brethren of the Common Life. Thomas ?
